Georgian Slickenstone in Lignum Vitae wood

Georgian Slickenstone in Lignum Vitae wood

Price: SOLD
Ref: 10245

A fine quality example of  this rare item of Georgian domestic treen: a `slickenstone` or linen smoother crafted in inverted mushroom form from solid lignum vitae wood selected for its dense grain, imperviousness to water and characteristic contrasting figure, now of lovely colour with rich patina.  Slickenstones were more commonly made from glass or marble and were used in wealthy households, `cap` side down in a circular motion, to smooth out creases from damp linen after it had been washed and starched. A lovely piece to delight the most discerning collector of English domestic treen. Impossible to date accurately but probably circa 1680-1750.

Ref: An almost identical example is featured in ` Treen and other Wooden Bygones` by E H Pinto, p. 155 plate 156 H.
