A decorative and still practical, late 19th century, London made, small bottle holder or coaster cast in brass with all-over
repoussé ornament of scrolling foliate motifs interspersed with three cabochon cartouches. The holder is raised on an integral, protruding moulded base, the underside of which is impressed with the stamp, AFC (A Frankau & Co) and the registered number for the year, 1885. An attractive piece of exuberant Victorian style remaining in excellent condition.
A. Frankau & Co, 119/121 Queen Victoria Street, EC4
The internal diameter of the holder is 7cm, too small for a regular sized wine bottle but would hold a half bottle or perhaps a bottle of dessert wine. Alternatively, it would be ideal for Worcestershire sauce bottles, vinegar or ketchup. It might also serve as a decorative candle holder.
