19th Century Watercolour - Falco Australis

19th Century Watercolour - Falco Australis

Price: SOLD
Ref: 10389

A bold and decorative image: an early 19th century, large, framed, original watercolour of a bird of prey, 'Falco Australis'.  Perched in his natural habitat on a cliff edge, the falcon is beautifully detailed, showing clearly its distinctive dark and light brown feathers and fearsome talons. The watercolour is held within a smart canted frame of rosewood delineated with a gilt slip. A fine picture remaining in excellent condition. Circa 1820-30.

The Falco Australis, also known as Forster's Caracara is generally found on islets off the extreme south of South America including The Falklands, Staten, Navarino and Cape Horn. It measures between 53-65cm with a wingspan of 116-125cm.

H: 37.5cm (14.8")   W: 32.5cm (12.8")   D: 4cm (1.6")
