Regency Penwork Letter Holder

Regency Penwork Letter Holder

Price: SOLD
Ref: 10317

An utterly charming, English Regency period letter holder made from a pale, golden wood (possibly sycamore), and profusely decorated with traditional, contrasting black penwork.  The ebonised backboard is fitted with two sloping pockets, the top one featuring a central panel of a bird feeding her nesting chicks, the lower depicting a row of charming riverside warehouse buildings with hills beyond.  Both panels are surrounded with a variety of well-drawn floral and foliate motifs.  The sides feature a simple, yet effective geometric pattern.  The shaped top with hole for hanging, is ornamented with an interlocking scroll. An elegant and still practical furnishing item remaining in excellent original condition. Circa 1810-20.

H: 23cm (9.1")   W: 13cm (5.1")   D: 4.5cm (1.8")
